From the important 35 volume 'Encyclopedie' by Denis Diderot & Jean Le Rond d'Alembert published in Paris between 1751 & 1780 which epitomised The Age of Enlightenment and endeavoured to explain the entire scope of human knowledge

The Age of Enlightenment was an era of almost constant war in Europe and north America so this topic was heavily represented in the encyclopedia, the text providing 1.250 articles on military theory, warfare, artillery and tactics.

These engravings feature three examples of 'FLEET MANOEUVRES'
